Choosing among the best hotels near Zilker Park and ACL festival gates comes down to one question: how far do you want to walk at the end of a long day on the grass, with a very large crowd walking the same way? The Carpenter Hotel and The Loren at Lady Bird Lake are the closest full-service stays, roughly a 15- to 25-minute walk from Zilker’s edge on Barton Springs Road. The South Congress hotels (Hotel San José, the Austin Motel, Hotel Saint Cecilia and Hotel Magdalena) are about two miles out, which is a 35- to 45-minute walk. Downtown hotels suit people who’d rather ride the festival shuttle and spend the evenings downtown.

This guide is for ACL-goers and for anyone who wants a base near Zilker for Barton Springs Pool and the Butler Trail. The caveat that matters: on festival weekends, prices, minimum stays and cancellation rules change sharply, so this guide doesn’t quote rates and you should read the booking terms line by line. Walking times are our estimates from mapped distances; the festival details come from ACL’s own FAQ, and everything was checked September 26, 2026 against official sources. For the wider picture of neighborhoods and hotel styles, start with our guide to where to stay in Austin.

What’s closed or different right now?

  • ACL 2026 is over; the lawn isn’t back yet. The festival ran October 2 to 4 and 9 to 11, 2026, and Zilker’s Great Lawn stays closed through October 18 for the teardown. ACL runs over two October weekends each year; watch the festival’s site for 2027 dates, because hotels near Zilker start filling as soon as they’re announced.
  • The South Congress Hotel is closed. It closed for renovation around May 31, 2026 and is expected to reopen in spring 2027 as The Standard, so older ACL hotel lists that recommend it are out of date.
  • Formula 1 is two weeks behind ACL. The United States Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas runs October 23 to 25, 2026, which keeps citywide hotel demand high through late October.
  • Butler Trail detours near I-35. The trail’s north shore near Rainey Street has detours for the I-35 rebuild, which matters if you’re walking to Zilker from an east-side downtown hotel. The City expected the permanent route back around September or October 2026, with intermittent detours again from November 2026 through January 2027.

How far is each hotel from Zilker Park and the ACL gates?

ACL has three entrances. From the south shore and South Congress, you walk west along Barton Springs Road to the Barton Springs East or Barton Springs West entrance. From downtown, you cross the lake and approach the Lady Bird Entrance on the north side of the park by the pedestrian bridge under MoPac. The distances below are to Zilker’s eastern edge on Barton Springs Road for south-side hotels, and to the Lady Bird Entrance for downtown hotels.

Hotel Area Distance (approx.) Walk (approx.) Best for
Carpenter Hotel 400 Josephine St., by Butler Park About 0.8 mile 15 to 20 minutes The shortest walk from a proper hotel
The Loren at Lady Bird Lake 1211 W. Riverside Dr., south shore About 1.1 miles 20 to 25 minutes Luxury, lake views, a short walk
Hyatt Regency Austin 208 Barton Springs Rd., south shore About 1.5 miles About 30 minutes Big-hotel amenities on the lake
Embassy Suites Downtown South Congress 300 S. Congress Ave. About 1.7 miles 35 minutes Groups who want separate living space
Hotel Magdalena Music Lane, off South Congress About 1.9 miles 40 minutes Design, a restaurant and a vinyl bar on site
Hotel Saint Cecilia Off South Congress About 1.9 miles 40 minutes A quiet, secluded splurge
Hotel San José and Austin Motel South Congress About 2 miles 40 to 45 minutes South Congress nights after the festival
Downtown’s west end (such as Austin Proper) Near Second Street and Seaholm About 1.5 miles About 30 minutes The festival shuttle and downtown dinners
Downtown core and lakefront (The LINE, Four Seasons, The Driskill) Downtown 2 to 2.5 miles 40 to 50 minutes Shuttle riders and nightlife
Rainey Street (Hotel Van Zandt) Downtown’s east edge About 2.5 miles About 50 minutes Bars after the last set; a bike or a ride in
East Austin (Heywood Hotel) East Cesar Chavez About 3 miles Bike or rideshare A small, quiet base

These are walking estimates at a steady pace from mapped routes, not official figures. Add time at festival exits, where the crowd sets the pace, and add a lot of time in heat: early October afternoons in Austin can still be summer.

Which base fits your kind of festival weekend?

Distance isn’t the only thing that matters. Here’s how the areas compare on the things festival-goers actually argue about:

Priority Best base Why
Shortest walk The Carpenter or The Loren Roughly 15 to 25 minutes to Zilker’s edge
Nightlife after the last set South Congress or downtown Bars, late food and live music within a short walk of the hotel
Quiet and sleep Hotel Saint Cecilia, or a small East Austin hotel Few rooms and no crowds outside the door
Groups of four or more Embassy Suites, or a neighborhood rental Separate living space and room to spread out
Using the festival shuttle The west end of downtown Closest to the Sand Beach Park shuttle stop
Budget North Austin on the MetroRapid 803 line, or East Austin with a bike Lower rates in exchange for a ride in

Two ways to walk in from South Congress

From the South Congress hotels there are two sensible walking routes. The direct one runs along Barton Springs Road, west from South Congress past South First Street and South Lamar to Zilker. It’s all sidewalk, it passes restaurants and convenience stores for water and snacks, and it’s the route most people take. The quieter alternative is the Butler Trail along the south shore of Lady Bird Lake, heading west from the Congress Avenue Bridge past Auditorium Shores. It’s shadier and has no traffic lights, but it adds some distance and can be dark on the way home at night, so it’s better as a morning walk in than an evening walk back.

Which hotels are closest to Zilker Park?

An open lawn and paved plaza at Butler Metro Park with downtown Austin towers rising behind the trees
Butler Park, across South Lamar from the Carpenter Hotel. Zilker is a short walk west along Barton Springs Road.

Carpenter Hotel

The Carpenter is the closest full hotel to Zilker, at 400 Josephine St. in the pocket between Barton Springs Road and Lady Bird Lake, just west of South Lamar and across it from Butler Park. It’s a Bunkhouse property with 93 rooms set among heritage pecan trees, pitched by its owner as a bridge between the city and the outdoors, and that’s a fair description of its location for festival purposes: you can walk to Zilker’s edge in roughly 15 to 20 minutes, and the Butler Trail is a block or two away for a morning run before the gates open.

Verdict: The best ACL location of any hotel in this guide. Book early; with 93 rooms, it doesn’t take long to fill.

The Loren at Lady Bird Lake

The Loren sits at 1211 W. Riverside Dr. on the south shore of Lady Bird Lake, and it’s the high-end choice close to Zilker. The walk west along Barton Springs Road takes roughly 20 to 25 minutes, and you’re a short walk from the Butler Trail and Auditorium Shores. For a festival weekend, it’s the hotel for people who want a lake view to come back to after a day in the dust.

Verdict: If budget is less of a concern than walking distance, this is the pick.

Hyatt Regency Austin

The Hyatt Regency Austin's pool deck with lounge chairs and umbrellas, with downtown towers across Lady Bird Lake
The Hyatt Regency’s pool deck on the south shore, with downtown across the lake. The bat-cruise boats dock right outside.

The Hyatt Regency is the big-hotel option on the south shore, at 208 Barton Springs Rd. by the South First Street bridge. It’s about a 30-minute walk west along Barton Springs Road to Zilker, and it has the things a large hotel does well: plenty of rooms, a pool with a skyline view, and the lake right outside. The Capital Cruises bat-watching boats leave from the hotel’s own dock, and the Lone Star Riverboat dock is about 100 yards west, which makes it an easy base for a bat cruise on a non-festival evening.

Verdict: A dependable middle ground: walkable to Zilker, walkable to downtown over the bridges, and big enough to be worth checking when the small hotels are full.

Are South Congress hotels a good base for ACL?

Yes, if you’re happy walking about two miles each way or taking a short ride. South Congress puts you among restaurants, bars and live music after the festival, and plenty of festival-goers choose it for exactly that reason. The trade-off is the walk: roughly 35 to 45 minutes along Barton Springs Road, and the same back at night.

Hotel San José

A revitalized 1936 motor court with 40 bungalow-style rooms at 1316 S. Congress Ave., run by Bunkhouse, with Jo’s Coffee, its sister coffee shop, next door. It’s the South Congress stay with the most character per square foot, and it’s in the middle of the strip, so dinner and a nightcap are a stroll away after the festival.

Austin Motel

Another Bunkhouse property on South Congress, with 41 guest rooms and suites and its famous kidney-shaped pool. It’s a festival-friendly kind of place: casual, social and close to the South Congress bars. Visit Austin’s accessibility roundup notes on-site parking and an accessible path to the entrance.

Hotel Saint Cecilia

Twenty secluded rooms just off South Congress, with a pool under a SOUL neon sign and late-1960s and early-1970s design. It’s the quiet splurge of the group, and after two days of crowds, quiet is worth something. Book the minute dates are out; 20 rooms go fast.

Hotel Magdalena

Bunkhouse’s largest South Congress-area hotel, with 89 rooms in a 1970s lake-house style on Music Lane, just off the avenue. It has its own restaurant, Summer on Music Lane, and the Equipment Room, a high-fidelity vinyl listening bar in the basement, which makes for a good wind-down after a day of amplified sound.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Austin Downtown South Congress

At 300 S. Congress Ave., at the south end of the Congress Avenue Bridge, this all-suite hotel is the practical choice for groups: separate living space means four friends don’t have to share one room for three nights. It’s about 35 minutes on foot to Zilker, and downtown is across the bridge.

Verdict: South Congress is the right base if the evenings matter as much as the festival. Pick the San José or the Austin Motel for the scene, Saint Cecilia for quiet, Magdalena for design, and Embassy Suites for a group.

Should you stay downtown for ACL?

An afternoon set at ACL in 2022. The festival runs over two October weekends in Zilker Park.

Downtown makes sense if you’d rather ride than walk, want the most hotel choice, or plan to spend the evenings on Sixth Street, Rainey Street or at downtown music venues. ACL’s shuttle boards at Sand Beach Park, at the corner of Walter Seaholm Drive and Electric Drive on the west side of downtown, from 11:30 a.m. each festival day, and drops off outside the Barton Springs West entrance. That makes the west end of downtown, around Second Street and the Seaholm district, the most convenient part of downtown for shuttle riders; Austin Proper is one of the hotels there.

If you’d rather walk, the route from downtown follows the Butler Trail west along the north shore of Lady Bird Lake to the pedestrian bridge under MoPac, which leads to the festival’s Lady Bird Entrance. From the downtown core and the lakefront, that’s roughly 40 to 50 minutes. Downtown’s big names all work as festival bases:

  • The LINE Austin, downtown, for a stylish base that also happens to take pets free of charge, if the dog is coming.
  • Four Seasons Hotel Austin, facing Lady Bird Lake, with gardens and a back lawn for recovering between festival days.
  • The Driskill, at Sixth and Brazos since 1886, for history, with Sixth Street outside the door.
  • Hotel Van Zandt, by Rainey Street, for a rooftop pool and the bars nearest downtown’s east edge. It’s the farthest downtown option from Zilker, so plan on the shuttle, a bike or a ride.

For after-dark plans, our Austin live music guide covers the clubs, and the Austin nightlife guide covers the bars.

Verdict: Stay downtown if you’ll use the shuttle or you want nightlife more than a short walk. Choose the west end of downtown if you can.

What about East Austin and North Austin hotels?

They work for ACL with a plan. East Austin’s small hotels are about three miles from Zilker, too far to walk comfortably after a full day. The Heywood Hotel on East Cesar Chavez, for example, describes itself as seven rooms with a private courtyard, about three miles from the park. From East Austin, a bike or CapMetro Bikeshare is often faster than a car on festival days; bikeshare costs $2.50 plus 25 cents a minute for a single trip, or $10 for a day pass with unlimited 30-minute rides.

North Austin is a different calculation. Hotels near The Domain are around ten miles from Zilker, but CapMetro’s MetroRapid 803 runs between The Domain and South Lamar by way of UT and downtown, and ACL lists the 803 among the routes that run near the park. If you’ve found a room up north when everything close is gone, the 803 is your festival line. Airport hotels, on the other hand, are a poor choice: they’re far from the park, far from the evening action and not on a direct line.

Which hotel amenities matter on a festival weekend?

Three days of sun, dust and standing change what you want from a room. Look for these before you book:

  • A pool for the recovery hour. Several hotels in this guide have one worth planning around: the Austin Motel’s kidney-shaped pool, Hotel Saint Cecilia’s pool under its SOUL neon sign, the Hyatt Regency’s lakeside pool deck, the Four Seasons’ saltwater pool and Hotel Van Zandt’s rooftop pool.
  • Early check-in or bag storage on arrival day. If you land Friday morning and want to go straight to the park, ask the hotel to hold your bags. On departure day, the Visit Austin Visitor Center at 103 E. Fifth St. stores luggage for $8 per piece per day, space permitting.
  • A fridge and a way to refill water. Heat is still a factor in early October, and you’ll want cold water ready before you leave each day.
  • Laundry. Festival clothes after a dusty or muddy day are a real problem by Sunday.
  • A late checkout on Monday. Worth asking for if you’re staying through the last headliner on Sunday night.

What about neighborhood rentals near Zilker?

The residential neighborhoods around the park (Zilker itself, Barton Hills to the south and west, Bouldin Creek between South Lamar and South Congress) put you within walking distance in a way few hotels can. For groups they can also work out cheaper per person than two or three hotel rooms. The trade-offs are real, though: house rules on noise and guests, strict parking on festival weekends, and no front desk when something goes wrong. Read the listing’s rules and cancellation terms carefully, confirm exactly how far the house is from Barton Springs Road on a map, and don’t count on parking a car nearby during the festival.

How do you save money on an ACL hotel?

The honest answer: trade distance for money, and plan the trade. Rooms within walking distance of Zilker cost the most on festival weekends because there are few of them. Farther-out rooms get cheaper, and with the right transport they’re only a little less convenient. Two setups work well. The first is a North Austin hotel on the MetroRapid 803 line, which runs from The Domain through UT and downtown to South Lamar near the park; the local fare is $1.25 and tapping a card caps the day at $2.50. The second is an East Austin hotel plus CapMetro Bikeshare, which costs $10 for a day pass of unlimited 30-minute rides, with bike parking right by the festival. Weekend two sometimes has different availability from weekend one, so check both if your dates are flexible. For the rest of the trip, our guide to Austin on a budget covers free and cheap things to do.

How do you get to ACL from your hotel?

ACL’s own advice is that walking and biking are by far the easiest ways to get to the festival. Here’s how each option works:

How Where it drops you What to know
Walking Barton Springs East or West from the south; the Lady Bird Entrance from downtown The most predictable option; bring water and wear shoes you can walk two miles in
Bike Bike parking on Stratford Drive after the MoPac pedestrian bridge, and on Azie Morton Road across from UMLAUF More bike and scooter parking on Toomey Road and Sterzing Street
Festival shuttle Outside the Barton Springs West entrance Boards at Sand Beach Park downtown from 11:30 a.m. each festival day
Rideshare Wherever the app routes you; expect surge pricing and long waits at closing time Lyft is ACL’s rideshare partner; enter “Austin City Limits Music Festival” or “Zilker Park” in the app
CapMetro bus Routes near Zilker, including MetroRapid 803 Local fare is $1.25; tap-to-pay caps at $2.50 a day
Driving Nowhere close ACL says there’s no parking at Zilker Park or in the surrounding neighborhoods during the festival

The last row is the one people ignore and regret. The neighborhoods around Zilker are residential, and the festival is explicit that there’s no parking there. If you’re driving into Austin, park at your hotel and leave the car there. For accessibility accommodations, including ADA services at the festival, ACL has a dedicated FAQ page, and our accessible Austin travel guide covers the rest of the city.

What does a festival day look like from a Zilker-area hotel?

The whole point of staying close is that the day bends around you rather than around a ride. A typical rhythm from the Carpenter, The Loren or a South Congress hotel:

  1. Morning: a slow breakfast, a swim or a lakeside walk on the Butler Trail while it’s still cool, and a check of the day’s set times.
  2. Late morning: walk in along Barton Springs Road, allowing 20 to 45 minutes depending on your hotel. Shuttle riders from downtown can board at Sand Beach Park from 11:30 a.m.
  3. Mid-afternoon: shade, water refills and the smaller stages while the sun is at its worst. Don’t plan on popping back to the hotel for a break unless you’ve checked ACL’s current re-entry rules first; many festivals don’t allow it.
  4. Night: walk out with the crowd after the last set, or peel off for a late dinner on South Congress or downtown before heading back.

The real advantage of the closest hotels shows up at both ends of the day: a relaxed morning with no transport to arrange, and a short walk to a shower and a bed when everyone else is waiting for a ride.

Weather and walking home

Early October isn’t reliably fall in Austin. Normal highs at the city’s official weather station don’t drop below 90°F until September 23, so the first festival weekend can still feel like summer, and a hot, dry spell turns the paths to dust. Pack sunscreen, a hat, comfortable shoes you’ve already broken in and a refillable bottle, and check ACL’s own list of what’s allowed in before you pack a bag. At night, walking home along Barton Springs Road with the rest of the crowd is the simplest plan: agree on a meeting point before phones die, keep a charged battery pack, and expect rideshare prices to jump for the first hour after closing.

What should you know before booking an ACL hotel?

Festival weekends are the most expensive and least flexible time to book near Zilker. A few things are worth knowing before you click:

  • Book when the dates are out, not when the lineup is. ACL runs the same basic setup over two consecutive weekends, and the closest hotels fill long before festival week. Waiting for the lineup usually means paying more for a farther room.
  • Read the minimum stay and cancellation terms. Festival weekends are when hotels are most likely to require multi-night stays and stricter cancellation policies than usual. Check both before you pay a deposit.
  • Budget for tax. Austin hotel rooms carry 17 percent in combined hotel occupancy taxes: 6 percent to the state and 11 percent to the City (a 9 percent occupancy tax plus a 2 percent venue tax). Hotels with 100 or more rooms inside the Tourism Public Improvement District also pay a 2 percent assessment on room nights, which many pass on as a separate nightly fee, and that fee is taxed too. On a $400 room, 17 percent adds $68 before any fee.
  • Compare weekend one and weekend two. With the same lineup across both weekends, flexible travelers can check which one has better availability near the park.
  • Consider a Sunday-night stay. Leaving Austin on a Sunday night after a headliner means joining everyone else at the airport; an extra night can be worth more than a stressful dash.

Verdict: Pick the location first, then the hotel. A plain room a 15-minute walk from Zilker beats a lovely one that needs a ride twice a day.

How do you get from the airport to a Zilker-area hotel?

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is southeast of downtown. By rideshare, pickups are on the ground level under the rental car facility, behind the Red Garage, and the ride to South Congress, downtown or the Zilker area is usually the simplest option with festival luggage. By bus, CapMetro’s Route 20 starts at the airport and runs every 15 to 30 minutes, seven days a week, along Riverside Drive to downtown and UT; from there, the south-shore and Zilker-area hotels are a short connection. On the way home, the airport tells domestic travelers to arrive at least 2.5 hours before their flight, and on the Monday after a festival weekend, the security lines will be full of people wearing the same wristband.

What if your trip includes F1, a game or a concert too?

October in Austin stacks events, and your hotel choice should follow whichever event is hardest to reach. For the Formula 1 weekend at Circuit of The Americas (October 23 to 25, 2026), COTA sells round-trip shuttle passes from Austin pickup points including Waterloo Park downtown, so a downtown hotel beats a Zilker one. For an Austin FC match, Q2 Stadium is in North Austin by CapMetro Rail’s McKalla Station, so a hotel near a downtown rail stop helps. For a concert or a Longhorns game at the Moody Center or the football stadium next to it on the UT campus, downtown and UT-area hotels are the closest. If ACL is the main event and the rest are side trips, stay near Zilker or on South Congress and ride out for the extras.

Is it worth staying near Zilker when ACL isn’t on?

The downtown Austin skyline rising beyond the trees and open lawn of Zilker Park, with people playing on the grass
Zilker’s lawn on an ordinary day. Outside festival season, the park is Austin’s big backyard.

Very much so. Outside festival weeks, a hotel near Zilker is one of the best bases in Austin for an active trip. The park is open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and everything is walkable from the Carpenter or The Loren: Barton Springs Pool, the Butler Trail, the Barton Creek Greenbelt, UMLAUF Sculpture Garden and the Zilker Botanical Garden. Families can ride the Zilker Eagle, the park’s mini train, which runs Friday through Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. (closed 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.) for $6 plus tax, with children under 2 free.

Barton Springs Pool, a short walk from the hotels closest to Zilker.

Two calendar notes. From the first Saturday of spring break through Labor Day, Zilker charges $3 an hour to park on weekends and holidays, which is one more reason to stay within walking distance. And each fall the Great Lawn closes for several weeks around ACL (in 2026, from September 21 to October 18), while the pool, the trail and the Greenbelt stay open; on festival weekends, Barton Springs Pool can be entered only from the Azie Morton Road side. Best Hotels Near Zilker Park FAQ

What is the closest hotel to Zilker Park?

The Carpenter Hotel, at 400 Josephine St. near Butler Park, is the closest full hotel, roughly a 15- to 20-minute walk to Zilker’s edge along Barton Springs Road. The Loren at Lady Bird Lake, at 1211 W. Riverside Dr., is the next closest at about 20 to 25 minutes. Both are estimates from mapped walking routes, and festival crowds slow everything down.

Can you walk to ACL from South Congress?

Yes. The South Congress hotels, including Hotel San José, the Austin Motel, Hotel Saint Cecilia and Hotel Magdalena, are about two miles from Zilker, roughly a 35- to 45-minute walk along Barton Springs Road. Many festival-goers walk in and take a rideshare or a bike back, especially on hot afternoons or after a late headliner.

Is there parking at ACL Festival?

No. ACL says there is no parking at Zilker Park or in the surrounding neighborhoods during the festival. Park at your hotel and walk, bike, ride the festival shuttle from Sand Beach Park downtown, take a CapMetro bus such as MetroRapid 803, or use Lyft, the festival’s rideshare partner.

Where does the ACL shuttle leave from?

Sand Beach Park, at the corner of Walter Seaholm Drive and Electric Drive on the west side of downtown. Shuttles start boarding at 11:30 a.m. each festival day and drop off outside the Barton Springs West entrance. Check ACL’s shuttle page for passes and return times before your first festival day.

How much tax is added to an Austin hotel room?

Seventeen percent in combined hotel occupancy taxes: 6 percent to the state and 11 percent to the City of Austin. Larger hotels in the Tourism Public Improvement District may also add a nightly TPID fee of about 2 percent, which is taxed as well. Check the booking total, not the nightly rate.

When should you book a hotel for ACL?

As soon as the festival announces its dates, which is well before the lineup. The closest hotels, like the Carpenter and The Loren, and the small South Congress properties, like the 20-room Hotel Saint Cecilia, are the first to fill. Read the minimum-stay and cancellation terms before you pay a deposit.

Is ACL weekend one or weekend two better for hotels?

Neither is reliably cheaper, but they can differ in availability, so check both if your dates are flexible. ACL runs the same basic setup over two consecutive October weekends, and hotels near Zilker fill for both. The closer you are to festival week, the more the difference comes down to which rooms happen to be left.
