The best rooftop bars in Austin are mostly on top of downtown hotels, and the right one depends on whether you want a sunset, a pool scene or a party. P6, on top of The LINE Austin, and Nido, the rooftop terrace at The Loren, face Lady Bird Lake and are the classic sunset picks. Arriba Abajo, a rooftop cantina on the fourth floor of Thompson Austin, and El Cockfight on East Fifth Street pour mezcal and tequila with a view. Azul, on top of The Westin Austin Downtown, turns from a pool scene by day into a lounge at sunset. And if you’d rather dance, Sixth Street and the Warehouse District have rooftops built for crowds.

This guide is for visitors who want a drink with the skyline, and it’s specific about the details that trip people up: hours, reservations, happy hours and whether a hotel rooftop is open to non-guests. Everything here was checked September 26, 2026 against the bars’ and hotels’ own pages and Visit Austin’s listings, and nothing is based on a visit; where a detail comes from a third-party listing, the text says so. For everything else about Austin after dark, see our Austin nightlife guide.

What’s different right now?

  • Formula 1 weekend is October 23 to 25, 2026. Downtown rooftops fill with race fans; book any rooftop that takes reservations well ahead for that weekend.
  • Sunsets are getting earlier. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026, which pulls sunset an hour earlier. Plan sunset drinks around the day’s actual sunset time rather than a fixed hour.
  • The heat hasn’t quite gone. Normal highs at Austin’s official weather station stay at 90°F or above until late September, and early October afternoons can still be hot on an unshaded roof. Evenings are the easy time.

The best rooftop bars in Austin, ranked

Ranked for a visitor who wants a great drink with a view, weighing the view itself, how easy it is to get in, and what else the rooftop offers. Every rooftop in the list has an official page or a current listing as of September 2026.

A few things are deliberately left out. Guest-only hotel pool decks aren’t much use to most visitors, and private event spaces, like the Moody Rooftop at The Contemporary Austin’s Jones Center, which Visit Austin lists among its event venues, aren’t bars you can walk into on a Tuesday. Rooftop patios at restaurants that close early also didn’t make the ranking, since the point here is a drink with a view in the evening.

1. P6 at The LINE Austin

P6 sits on top of The LINE Austin downtown, and listings describe it as a former rooftop parking level turned into a lounge with views over Lady Bird Lake and South Austin. It’s the most straightforward sunset bar in the city: the hotel posts hours of 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 4 to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and it highly recommends reservations and inquiries in advance. Because it opens at 4 p.m., an early-evening booking catches golden hour on the lake almost all year.

Good to know: The LINE’s posted pet policy lets pets stay free with no weight limit, so it’s also an easy base if you’re traveling with a dog, though ask the bar about dogs on the roof itself. The Congress Avenue Bridge, where the bats emerge at dusk in season, is a short walk away.

Verdict: The first rooftop to book for sunset drinks. Reserve for weekends.

2. Nido at The Loren

Nido is the rooftop restaurant at The Loren at Lady Bird Lake, on the south shore near the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge, and the hotel says its dining spaces are designed for locals as well as hotel guests. It has an indoor dining room and an outdoor terrace, and Visit Austin highlights the golden-hour views over the lake. Because it’s a restaurant first, it’s the best rooftop for a full dinner with the skyline rather than a quick drink. Walk the Butler Trail beforehand; it runs right past the hotel.

Good to know: From the west side of downtown, you can walk to Nido in about 20 minutes: take the Butler Trail or the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge across Lady Bird Lake to the south shore, and the hotel is a short walk east along Riverside Drive. The hotel’s valet is $60 plus taxes and fees per night for overnight guests, so non-guests are better off walking or taking a rideshare.

Verdict: The pick for a sunset dinner with the city across the water.

3. Arriba Abajo at Thompson Austin

Arriba Abajo is an Oaxacan-inspired rooftop cantina on the fourth floor of Thompson Austin, at 506 San Jacinto Blvd. downtown, and it keeps the most generous hours of any rooftop here: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight on Friday, 10 a.m. to midnight on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday. Happy hour runs from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday in the main dining area, and there’s a daily reverse happy hour from 7 to 9 p.m. at the outdoor patio bar. Weekend brunch makes it one of the few rooftops that works in daylight hours, too.

Good to know: The reverse happy hour is at the outdoor patio bar, not the dining room, so head outside after 7 p.m. to catch it. Weekend mornings are the calmest time to get a table with a view.

Verdict: The best all-day rooftop, and the best-value one if you time the happy hours right.

4. Azul Rooftop at The Westin Austin Downtown

The Westin Austin Downtown's tall gray and glass hotel tower against a blue sky
The Westin Austin Downtown. Azul, its rooftop bar and pool, sits at the top.

Azul is the rooftop of The Westin Austin Downtown, and the hotel describes the shift that defines it: a lively daytime pool scene that turns into an upscale rooftop lounge at sunset. It’s open to the public and popular with locals, and happy hour runs from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. Third-party rooftop guides describe it as one of the highest rooftop bars in Austin, about 20 floors up, with a heated pool, private cabanas and fire pits, which makes it one of the few rooftops that stays comfortable on a cool winter evening.

Good to know: Because Azul is also the hotel’s pool, the daytime crowd is in swimsuits and the evening crowd isn’t; plan your outfit for the hour you arrive. Happy hour doesn’t run on Friday or Saturday.

Verdict: The pick for height and a pool-party feel; go at happy hour and stay for the sunset.

5. El Cockfight

El Cockfight is a mezcal and tequila rooftop bar at 121 E. Fifth St. downtown, and it’s the least formal rooftop on this list. Current listings show it open from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. on weekends, with a daily happy hour until 6 p.m., and it’s the kind of place you can walk into without a plan. Visit Austin’s speakeasy guide also placed the Red-Headed Stepchild, a hidden bar with a door code you get from the El Cockfight bartender, right next door, which makes a fun two-stop evening if the arrangement still holds.

Good to know: Fifth Street is inside downtown’s metered zone, which runs until midnight Wednesday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturday; on Sunday, street parking is free.

Verdict: The pick for a casual rooftop drink, late, without a reservation. Confirm hours before a special trip.

6. 77 Degrees Rooftop

Domain Northside in North Austin at night, with a lit sign, restaurant patios and people on a lawn
Domain NORTHSIDE in North Austin. 77 Degrees sits on a rooftop above the shops.

77 Degrees is North Austin’s rooftop, perched above Domain NORTHSIDE, and Visit Austin describes it as three stories with panoramic views, frozen drinks, signature cocktails and mocktails, and a sunset happy hour. If you’re staying near The Domain or shopping there, it saves a trip downtown; the views are of North Austin rather than the lake, but the sunsets are just as good.

Good to know: Downtown is about 10 miles south, so 77 Degrees works best as part of a Domain day rather than a special trip. CapMetro’s MetroRapid 803 links The Domain with UT and downtown if you’d rather not drive.

Verdict: The pick if you’re staying or shopping in North Austin.

7. La Piscina at Austin Proper

La Piscina is Austin Proper’s rooftop restaurant and pool-deck lounge, on the hotel’s fifth floor in the Second Street District. Guides describe a Mexican-villa style space with lush desert plants and a menu of cocktails, small plates and raw seafood. Because it’s also the hotel’s pool deck, check the hotel’s site or call ahead about access for non-guests on the day you plan to visit, especially on summer weekends.

Good to know: Austin Proper also has Goldie’s Sunken Lounge and The Peacock restaurant downstairs, so if the pool deck is guests-only when you arrive, you still have a good drink in the building.

Verdict: The pick for a stylish pool-deck cocktail if you’re staying at the Proper or can confirm access.

8. Edge Rooftop at JW Marriott Austin

Edge Rooftop is the rooftop bar of the JW Marriott Austin, a 34-story downtown tower that also has a rooftop pool and the Spa by JW. It’s a solid choice for a drink with a view if you’re staying at the JW or attending an event downtown; check the hotel’s site for current hours and whether the bar is open to the public that day.

Good to know: If Edge is closed for a private event, Azul, P6 and Arriba Abajo are all a short walk away downtown, so it’s easy to switch plans without a ride.

Verdict: A convenient rooftop drink for JW guests and downtown business travelers.

Which rooftops are best for a party?

The Frost Bank Tower's pointed glass crown rising behind historic storefronts on Sixth Street in downtown Austin
The Frost Bank Tower over Sixth Street, the view from several of the street’s rooftop patios.

If you want music, crowds and a late night rather than a quiet sunset, Sixth Street and the Warehouse District have rooftops built for it. Visit Austin’s nightlife listings include:

  • Speakeasy’s Terrace59: a covered, heated rooftop with a spacious lounge, a full bar and downtown skyline views, one of the few that works in any weather.
  • Maggie Mae’s: billed as the largest rooftop patio on Sixth Street.
  • Shakespeare’s Pub: a Sixth Street rooftop patio with views of the Frost Bank Tower.
  • The Blind Pig Pub: a covered rooftop over the skyline, with local bands.
  • Coconut Club: a multi-level, LGBTQ-friendly rooftop dance club in the Warehouse District, with regular DJ sets and weekend rooftop drag shows.
  • Neon Grotto: a neon-lit nightclub with rooftop views, drag shows and DJs.
  • Green Light Social: DJs, dancing and skyline views.

These are party rooftops first and view rooftops second, so expect crowds, cover charges on busy nights and loud music. For a quieter drink with a view, stick to the hotel rooftops above.

Which rooftop has the best view?

Aerial view of downtown Austin's towers along Lady Bird Lake, with a bridge crossing the water and autumn trees along the shore, a scene the best rooftop bars in Austin look out on
Downtown Austin and Lady Bird Lake from above. Rooftops on the lake’s edge get the water and the skyline together.

It depends on what you want to look at:

You want to see… Go to Why
The lake and a sunset P6 or Nido Both face Lady Bird Lake, P6 from downtown and Nido from the south shore looking back at the skyline
The skyline from above Azul About 20 floors up, per third-party guides
Downtown’s towers up close Arriba Abajo or El Cockfight Rooftops in the middle of the grid
The Frost Bank Tower Shakespeare’s Pub A Sixth Street patio facing the tower
North Austin sunsets 77 Degrees Above Domain NORTHSIDE

For the classic postcard of the whole skyline over the water, you’ll need to be on the south side of the lake, which is why Nido is the one to book if the view matters most.

How do you plan sunset drinks and the bats?

An orange sunset over trees and a moored tour boat at the Capital Cruises docks on Lady Bird Lake
Sunset at the Capital Cruises docks on Lady Bird Lake, where the bat cruises start.

Austin’s best free show happens at dusk, when the bats that roost under the Congress Avenue Bridge stream out to feed, from about March through late September, with some staying into the fall. A rooftop sunset and the bats make a natural pair: have a drink at P6, Nido or Arriba Abajo as the sun goes down, then head to the bridge or a bat cruise. The Capital Cruises boats leave from the Hyatt Regency’s dock at 208 Barton Springs Rd., and the Lone Star Riverboat dock is about 100 yards west. For timing, check the day’s sunset and arrive at the rooftop an hour before it; the best tables go first.

Can you pair a rooftop with live music?

Easily, because Austin’s rooftops sit close to its music districts. Start with sunset at P6 or Arriba Abajo, then walk to the Red River Cultural District for a show at Mohawk, which has indoor and outdoor stages, or Stubb’s. From La Piscina or Coconut Club in the Second Street and Warehouse District area, ACL Live at The Moody Theater is a short walk. On Sixth Street, The Blind Pig Pub’s covered rooftop has local bands of its own. And from Nido on the south shore, South Congress and the Continental Club are a short ride away. Our Austin live music guide has the full list of venues.

What should you know before you go?

  • Hotel rooftops can limit access. Pool decks are often for hotel guests by day, and some rooftops restrict non-guests when they’re busy. P6 and Nido publish their welcome to outside guests; for La Piscina and Edge, check before you go.
  • Book for weekends and sunsets. P6 highly recommends reservations; restaurants like Nido and Arriba Abajo take dinner bookings.
  • Time the happy hours. Arriba Abajo runs 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday plus a daily 7 to 9 p.m. reverse happy hour at its patio bar; Azul runs 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; El Cockfight’s happy hour runs until 6 p.m. daily, per current listings.
  • Dress for the weather, not the view. Summer roofs are hot until after sunset; winter roofs can be windy and cold. Terrace59 is covered and heated, and Azul has fire pits, per third-party guides.
  • Watch the weather. Rooftops close parts of their space in storms and lightning, which move in fast in spring. Have an indoor backup nearby.
  • Bring ID. The drinking age is 21, and some rooftops restrict entry to adults in the evening, so check before bringing teenagers.

When is the best time of year for rooftop drinks?

Austin’s rooftop season is long, but not every month is comfortable at every hour:

Season On the roof Plan
October and November The best stretch: warm afternoons, mild evenings Sunset drinks any day; expect crowds around ACL and Formula 1
December to February Mostly mild, with cold snaps and wind Choose covered or heated spots like Terrace59, or Azul’s fire pits
March and April Pleasant, busy, with sudden storms SXSW packs downtown in March; have an indoor backup
May to September Hot until after sunset, with normal highs of 90°F and up Pool decks by day, drinks after sunset; bats from about March through late September

From late May to late September, the difference between 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on an unshaded roof is enormous. Book the later table, bring sunscreen anyway, and drink water between rounds.

Where else can you get a skyline view?

Not every great view comes with a bar tab. A few free alternatives:

  • Mount Bonnell, a 784-foot promontory above Lake Austin in West Austin, is open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and reached by stone stairs; the view is of the lake and the hills rather than downtown.
  • The Central Library’s rooftop garden, on the sixth floor of the free downtown library at 710 W. César Chávez St., has native plants and butterfly habitat under a large solar canopy; check the library’s hours.
  • The Congress Avenue Bridge gives a classic view of the skyline and, at dusk from spring into fall, the bats.
  • The Butler Trail boardwalk on the south shore of Lady Bird Lake, open 5 a.m. to midnight, looks straight across at downtown.

Pair one with a rooftop drink afterward, or skip the drink entirely; the view is the same.

What’s the etiquette at a rooftop bar?

  • Respect the reservation window. Popular rooftops may seat you for a set time at sunset; ask when you book so the next group doesn’t have to ask you to move.
  • Expect a card hold if you open a tab, and close it before you leave.
  • Tip around 20 percent of the bill at a table, the U.S. standard at sit-down bars.
  • Check the dress code at hotel rooftops in the evening; smart-casual works nearly everywhere, but pool attire usually doesn’t after sunset.
  • Keep it down on pool decks by day, where hotel guests are trying to relax.

Are Austin’s rooftops accessible?

Hotel rooftops are usually the easiest, since they’re reached by elevator: P6, Nido, Arriba Abajo, Azul, La Piscina and Edge all sit in hotels. Some of the older Sixth Street buildings reach their rooftop patios by stairs, so call ahead if steps are a problem, and ask about accessible restrooms on the roof level. Crowds make even an accessible rooftop hard work on a weekend night; weekday evenings and early sunsets are easier. Our accessible Austin travel guide covers the rest of the city.

What does a rooftop crawl look like?

Downtown’s rooftops sit close enough together to string into one evening on foot. A sample route:

  1. 5 p.m.: happy hour at Azul (Sunday through Thursday, 3 to 5 p.m.) or the start of Arriba Abajo’s 4 to 6 p.m. happy hour.
  2. An hour before sunset: P6, with a reservation, for golden hour over the lake.
  3. After dark: a walk to the Congress Avenue Bridge for the bats in season.
  4. 9 p.m.: El Cockfight for mezcal, or Arriba Abajo’s 7 to 9 p.m. reverse happy hour at the patio bar.
  5. Late: Sixth Street’s party rooftops, or a quieter cocktail at one of Austin’s best cocktail bars nearby.

For the quieter half of the night, see our guide to the best cocktail bars in Austin.

How do you get to and from Austin’s rooftops?

Downtown Austin at night, with the Westin tower and the lit crown of the Frost Bank Tower above a parking lot and street lights
Downtown at night. Most rooftops are a short walk apart; the ride home is the part to plan.

Walk between them and ride home. Downtown’s hotel rooftops cluster within a few blocks of Congress Avenue, and Nido is across the lake by the Butler Trail. If you drive, downtown street meters (roughly I-35 to Lamar, Lady Bird Lake to 10th Street) run until midnight Wednesday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturday, and Sundays aren’t metered. CapMetro’s local fare is $1.25, with a $2.50 daily cap when you tap a card. For the trip home, book a rideshare to a pickup point a block or two off Sixth Street, where the corners jam at closing time, and never drive after drinking.

Where should you stay for a rooftop weekend?

Stay at one of the rooftop hotels and the view is an elevator ride away. The LINE Austin has P6 on top and lets pets stay free with no weight limit, per its posted policy. The Loren has Nido, a spa and the Butler Trail at the door. Austin Proper has La Piscina and its other bars in the Second Street District. The Westin Austin Downtown has Azul.
